5. Teachers have only one period a week for prep time. because Since there are no no art, music, physical education, etc.classes, the teachers are with their students all day. 6. At the middle school there is a 25% student turnover rate. Not all of the children can eat in the cafeteria at once; some have to eat in the art room. 7. There is one full time principal for both the middle and elementary schools. 8. The assistant principal at the elementary school is also a full time teacher. Half her day is taken up by her assistant principal duties. A teacher's aid covers her classroom. 9. The first grade class size often reaches 28 students. It is extremely difficult to teach children that age in a class that size. 10.There is no afternoon transportation for kindergarten students. Parents have to arrange to pick them up. 11. There is a high teacher turnover because of low salaries, no prep time and a heavy work load all of which have a negative impact on the students. 12. At the middle school, special education is taught in a converted locker room with a toilet. 13. The middle school also contains a padded room for children with severe behavioral problems. The children are restrained in the room until they are picked up by their parents or the police. FRANKLIN 1.There is no Alternative School or other programs for "at-risk" students in the elementary and high schools. 2. There are not enough resources to provide reading specialists. 3. The average class size in grades K-3 is 25 students. The optimum class size for this age group is 11. 4. There is a 25% teacher turnover rate per year. The teacher salaries in Franklin are $1,000 to $2,000 dollars less than salaries in other towns in the Lakes region. Fifty percent of the teaching staff at Franklin has less than 5 years teaching experience. 5. Franklin's high school was built in the the 1920's with additions built in the 1950's and 1960's. The building requires over $6 million in capital improvements. When the 1930's heating system breaks, replacement parts have to be milled because they are no longer available. The heat can not be regulated, so that one part of the building can resemble the Tropics and another part the Arctic. 6. 75% of the computers the students use are outdated Apple II-e's and GS's. Only 10% of the computers are Power PC's with CD-ROMs. They are all in the high school library. They are the only computers that are networked. 7. There is no Internet access at the high school. The building is not wired to network computers. There are asbestos tiles that have to be removed before the building can be rewired. 8. The gym in the high school is unsafe for varsity high school basketball games. The equipment in the machine shop is obsolete. No new furniture, such as student desks, has been purchased in 11 years. 9. Teachers in the high school teach 6 out of the 7 periods per day with one 49 minute period for class prep. They teach 113 students per day.The department heads also teach 6 periods a day.
