The year round demographics of the two towns are similar:

The primary economic difference between the two towns is that Moultonborough has many vacation homes located along the shoreline of Lake Winnipesaukee. In 1995, Moultonborough had an equalized valuation of property per pupil of $1,324,013. The equalized school tax rate of $5.48 raised $7,251 per pupil from local property taxes.

In 1995, Pittsfield had an equalized valuation of property per pupil of $140,419. Pittsfield's tax base resulted in an equalized school tax rate of $25.32. Despite the significant tax burden on Pittsfield's citizens, it generated only $3,555 per pupil.

A $100,000 house in Pittsfield would have a school tax bill of $2,532. The school tax bill for a $100,000 house in Moultonborough would be $548:
